How to Build a Chain Link Fence

Building a chain link fence is a great DIY project that can be completed with a few basic tools and some patience. Follow these steps to build your own chain link fence:

Step 1: Plan Your Fence
Before you start building your fence, it is important to plan the layout and design. Measure the area where you want to install the fence and determine the desired height and length. Mark the boundaries of the fence with stakes and string to ensure accuracy.

Step 2: Set the Posts
Using a post hole digger, dig holes for the fence posts at least 2 feet deep and 6-8 inches in diameter. Space the posts 8-10 feet apart, depending on the length of the fence. Place a post in each hole and fill with concrete, making sure the post is level and plumb. Allow the concrete to dry for at least 24 hours.

Step 3: Install the Top Rail
Attach the top rail to the fence posts using rail end cups and bolts. The top rail should be installed at the top of the fence posts and run the length of the fence. Make sure the top rail is level and secure.

Step 4: Install the Tension Wire
Run a tension wire along the bottom of the fence, attaching it to the end posts with tension bands. Use a come-along to pull the wire tight and secure it to the other end post with a tension bar. This will help keep the fence taut and prevent sagging.

Step 5: Install the Chain Link Fabric
Unroll the chain link fabric along the fence line, starting at one end. Attach the fabric to the top rail with tie wires and to the tension wire with hog rings. Pull the fabric taut as you go and make sure it is centered on the fence posts.

Step 6: Install the Bottom Tension Wire
Run a bottom tension wire along the bottom of the fence, attaching it to the end posts with tension bands. Use a come-along to pull the wire tight and secure it to the other end post with a tension bar. This will help keep the bottom of the fence taut and prevent animals from digging underneath.

Step 7: Install the Gate
Install the gate according to the manufacturer's instructions. Attach the gate frame to the fence posts with hinges and install the latch and handle. Make sure the gate is level and swings freely.

Step 8: Finishing Touches
Trim any excess chain link fabric and tie wires with wire cutters. Add any additional hardware, such as post caps or decorative finials, to complete the fence.

Building a chain link fence can be a challenging project, but with the right tools and a little patience, you can create a durable and attractive fence that will last for years to come.
